Common Cartridge FAQs

What is an .imscc file?

An .imscc file is a special kind of zip file that uses a Common Cartridge specification to allow the same course data to be imported into different Learning Management Systems (LMS).

Will this file work with my LMS?

This file format has been confirmed to work with Moodle, Schoology, and Blackboard. If your system allows import of Common Cartridge 1.0 files, it should work.

How do I import into Moodle?

Moodle treats .imscc files like backups. You can restore an .imscc file into a course in the same way you restore a backup. See this help page for more information.

Moodle Tip: For best results, you may need to edit settings for each link to change from Embed to Open.

How do I import into Canvas?

Follow the steps outlined in this help page. While a folder of links in your account is not exactly a course, for the purposes of Canvas it is treated this way.

How do I import into Schoology?

Follow the steps outlined in this help page.

How do I import into Blackboard?

Follow the steps outlined in this help page.

NOTE: As of April 1, 2018, Blackboard's "Ultra" version does not yet support import of .imscc files.

Where can I get additional help?

Refer to the IMS Global guidelines outlined in this help page.
